25.11.2014 MONUMENT - FASHION SYMBOL IN MILAN

As I have already written many times Milan is a global capital of fashion and design, because all fashion trends derive from here and new ideas emerge here much earlier than in other cities. Therefore Milan couldn’t, but have a monument devoted to Fashion. And today I’m going to tell you exactly about this monument - Fashion symbol in Milan.

If you found yourself in the Cadorna Square, just a short distance from Castello Sforzesco, you won’t miss this Pop Art sculpture installation.

MONUMENT - FASHION SYMBOL IN MILAN

This gigantic 1 m wide and 18 m high steel needle  (as high as about a five-storied building) with a long (80 m) colored thread made of fiberglass and huge knot (3 m wide) protruding into the other side of the square can’t, but stand out.  The installation is so big, extraordinary and different from the rest of Milanese architecture. Though its name is much less original: “Needle, Thread and Knot” – simple like this without any special flourishes.

The symbol of Fashion was created by Swedish sculptor, Claes Oldenburg, and his wife, Coosje van Bruggen, – the couple is very popular in the Modern Art world, so the monument cost Milan a pretty good amount of money: equivalent to modern €700,000. And on 3 February 2000 unveiling of “Needle, Thread and Knot “sculpture installation was held: the orchestra was playing, the Mayer of Milan of that time gave a speech «the composition is not only a Fashion monument, but also a symbol of diligence of the Milanese...».

Unfortunately the Milanese did not like the sculpture at all, almost every second demanded ‘demolition of the nightmare’, and moreover art critics were not favorable to the composition. Stylists and designers, the monument was devoted to, poured oil on flames speaking out as follows: “ridiculous and inappropriate”.

I am not going to argue with designers, though for all I care it is an amusing monument, multicolored and visible from afar – very convenient to be taken as a reference point.

If you see "Needle, Thread and Knot" – it means Cadorna metro station is nearby (red line M1 and green line M2), and moreover you can take an express train to Malpensa airport here, then Castello Sforzesco castle is only 100 m away, and the Lord’s Supper by da Vinci  in Santa Maria delle Grazie church is round the corner (brown signs are available everywhere). Please see here how you can get to monument using a tram. So Needle, Thread and Knot monument may not be a masterpiece, but very helpful for tourists.

Have an educative tour of Milan!

I thank my super-brother Alexey for the professional English translation.
