04.03.2018 THE LAST SUPPER BY LEONARDO IN MILAN. WHY TO SEE IT AND HOW TO BUY TICKETS?

What is Milan famous for? Fashion, shopping, magnificent Duomo cathedral, Sforzesco castle, but no doubt the most famous sightseeing attraction of Milan is the Last Supper painting by Leonardo da Vinci – the most mystical work of the great genius drawing thousands and thousands of tourists from across the globe to Milan. The whole scientific investigations were devoted to the painting and after publication of the sensational book of the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown and release of the same movie with Tom Hanks starring, the interest in the Last Supper rocketed just sky-high! And that is why I want to tell you about the painting details worth focusing on when visiting and, of course, how you can buy tickets.

What are worth focusing on? First of all, I need to say (which is surely worth focusing on) the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci is NOT a fesco. A fresco is a mural painting executed upon freshly-laid lime plaster (fresca is Italian for ‘fresh’). The advantage of the technique is the painting lasts long and doesn’t lose brightness of colors as time goes by but application of the painting should be very fast while plaster is still wet and hasn’t dried up, therefore correcting or adding details is not possible. But the experimenter of genius Leonardo who was always striving for ideal expressiveness of his paintings (please read my report on Leonardo da Vinci exhibition in Milan to learn more about expressiveness and distinctive features of his paintings) was not happy with this option; therefore he decided to try other technique to create his future masterpiece: oil and tempera painting. The application allowed the painter to draw details and faces more thoroughly giving them more expressiveness and more mysticality in the case of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci

What are the secrets and mysticism in the painting by Leonardo? The most unbelievable theory was described by Dan Brown in his bestseller the Da Vinci Code. His book affirms Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalena and it is her, but not the Apostle John who is depicted on the left from Jesus on the painting. And as per the author the proof of the theory are some details of the painting: postures of the two characters forming the upturned letter of ‘M’ like Magdalena; contrasting colors of clothes; a palm on the woman’s neck that almost slits her throat;

the other hand belong to an unknown person and holding a knife; position of the bread on the table resembling a music scale and many other details, which can be listed with no end… The scientists affirm this is pure imagination. Is this so? I don’t know. The only thing I can tell you with confidence is that the secret and mysticism of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, the greatest man of genius of all who ever lived on earth, have not been unraveled to date causing an absolutely special fantastic feeling when visiting the painting.  See for yourself.

How can you buy tickets to see the Last Supper? The tickets to visit the Last Supper must be bought in advance; otherwise most probably you will see ‘SOLD OUT’ at the ticket office when you come there. How can you do that? But if you are ready to pay a little bit more then you can quietly buy it online on the VIATOR web-site  . It’s up to you to choose!

How can you get to the Last Supper in Milan? The Last Supper painting is located in the former refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie church at the address: Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie, 2. The easiest way to get there from Duomo Square is tram No 16. It will take you right in front of Santa Maria delle Grazie Square. If you take the metro then you need the red line М1 to Cadorna metro station (it is also the place where the Fashion Monument is located) and then you will need to walk for about 10 minutes.

The Last Supper visiting rules. Visits are strictly limited to groups of maximum 30 people for maximum 15 minutes to maintain stable temperature and humidity required to preserve this very fragile masterpiece of Leonardo da Vinci. It is closed on Mondays.

Interesting fact: during WW II in August 1943 Santa Maria delle Grazie church and refectory where the Last Supper is located were fully demolished by bombings. Only one wall stayed intact and it was the wall on which Leonardo had depicted his masterpiece…

Is there anybody still doubting the mysticism of the painting?
