01.02.2016 ITALIAN TOUR BY CAR. MAIN ISSUES: CAR RENTAL, TOLL ROADS, FINES AND PETROL

As per my clients the main reasons for fear of renting a car in Italy are expensive petrol, obscure Italian fines and toll Italian roads which are even more obscure. But it is not that fearful as it may seem, moreover after reading the post you will be able to calculate cost of travel, petrol and car rental in advance and you will decide on your own if it is acceptable for you or not. So let’s go!

Driving a car in Italy is a fair pleasure, the roads here are mainly smooth and well-conditioned without any potholes or ruts, and there are a lot of advantages in independent traveling round Italy by car: you can go in any direction and rhythm you want visiting marvelous places hard to get by public transport, and taking taxi with a driver would ruin you. And you can stay in cozy and homelike hotels or choose rural tourism to spend a night in the open air

which will be much cheaper than staying in city hotels. And modern navigators even in an unknown country will easily help you get wherever you need. And the article below will dispel your fears of toll roads and expensive petrol in Italy.

TOLL ROADS – ONLY motorways, in Italian autostrada are chargeable in Italy. They are indicated with the letter “A” against the green background on the maps and traffic signs.

The digit standing after the letter “A” means the motorway umber, for example: autostrada A1 Milano-Napoli – the longest toll road of Italy that will take you from Milan to Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. Some sections of the roads called superstrada can be also chargeable. They are indicated with the letter “E” against the green background on the maps and traffic signs.

All other roads of Italy which necessarily run nearby toll motorways are free! The advantage of motorways is there are no intersections or traffic lights and allowable speed is to 130 km/h and to 110 km/h in bad weather.

How can you pay? When entering any toll road in Italy you will see a check point like:

Please keep your eyes open, check points provided with the yellow caption TELEPASS are designed for cars connected to the electronic toll collection system TELEPASS and it is surely tempting to see cars running underneath them even without slowing down, but if your car is not equipped with the payment device TELEPASS, then the turnpike underneath the yellow captions just won’t rise. So we choose the blue caption lane of the check point, take a ticket manually like this:

And (necessarily!) we keep the ticket for the whole duration of traveling on the toll road – the ticket shows the entering point. At the check point when leaving the motorway I suggest choosing the tablet like this:

meaning payment in cash to a motorway worker, and if there is no a tablet like this, then anyway I suggest choosing the tablet of payment in cash since you may experience some problems with credit card payment. When paying you should give money to the worker or insert the ticket purchased when entering the motorway in the special device (indicated)and the display will show you how much to pay.

After the first successful payment you won’t have any problems in the future.

How can you calculate the toll motorway ad petrol cost? Italian toll motorways costs differ, i. e. the same distance on different sections of toll roads can cost differently. To avoid any unpleasant surprises I suggest visiting www.autostrade.it  where you can easily calculate a toll and even see the cheapest petrol stations.  Navigation within the web-site is very easy, if your browser is not provided with autoconversion function I suggest switching to the English version of the website and there are easily recognizable icons. The example given by me showed toll calculation from Milan to the Venice. By pressing “refilling” icon you can compare petrol prices in Italy and find the best one. In general everything is easy!
