24.10.2015 ITALIAN BUSINESS STYLE SECRETS. INTERVIEW WITH STEFANIA FORNONI, MILANESE IMAGE CONSULTANT

My interview with Stefania Fornoni, famous Milanese stylist and image consultant. By my personal experience I can say her pieces of advice on business dress style are very shrewd and useful and I hope they can be interesting not only to me.

The idea of having an interview with Stefania occurred to me long time ago: I am a faithful reader of her website, always make a note of her pieces of advice on business style that, I must confess, really help me have a required effect at business meetings. After noticing an almost magical transformation of her lady customers ‘before’ and ‘after’, reading her articles, by the way Stefania writes a column in the popular Italian magazine Donna Moderna (modern lady), you understand she is a true professional of her trade whose opinion you want to defer to.

And this impression becomes only stronger in a face-to-face meeting: neighborly and kind-hearted, elegant, but with no affectation (you bet, sure) Stefania turned out very interesting company and hour and a half of the interview just flew. Below is the conversation we enjoyed:

Stefania can you give a definition of ‘Italian dress style’?

Italian style for me is a harmonious fusion of traditions and fashion. The Italians are a very flexible nation and it is expressed in their attitude towards the clothes: they keep up with the fashion, but always honor traditions and harmony. And this is the secret of ‘Italian style’ that became equal to good taste far beyond Italy.

You work with reputable Italian businessmen and politicians and is there such a notion of ‘Italian chic’ in business style?

Certainly! Moreover, this is a big advantage if this chic is present in representatives of business and political elite no matter Italian or not. The traditional quality ‘Made in Italy’ is made-to-measure perfect fit business suits, ties and scarves made of Como silk, vests and coats made of Biella wool and many other accessories which are must-haves of a Italian businessman and unmistakable attributes of the status.

Stefania do you think the correctly composed visage can help in a career development?

I would say that who competently composes his/her visage and has a sound appearance, is inconsciously seen by others as being competent in the work. Success and career growth are based on our professionalism, and visage is a ‘wrapper’ letting us understand the quality of the contents.

What business wardrobe item in your opinion is essential for businessmen and businesswomen?

A dark blue suit is a must-have for businessmen and a little black dress for women. These two things would be appropriate in any situations: from most official to less official, it is sufficient to add proper accessories.

Stefania what does a ‘good cut’ mean to you?

If we talk about business suits, particularly coats,  the base element of the business wardrobe for men and women, ‘good cut’ is recognized at once by ideal shoulder fit, coat lapel which lies smoothly and doesn’t ridge, cut line which in this event outlines the waist and doesn’t form any asymmetry. Pants of good cut allow highlighting advantages of any figure, making legs look even longer and properly shaping buttocks.

Should clothes hide or highlight anything?

Properly selected clothes should highlight personality, but hide figure defects.

What exact business wardrobe items would you advise for ‘investing money’?

High quality footwear is a very important item having the effect of stability and self-confidence. If this is high quality footwear, then its sole doesn’t deform, heel doesn’t wear out and leather stays elastic over long period of time ensuring comfortable wearing. All that means this is a very eligible investment.

My last question. It might sound trivial, but everybody is interested in the following: How can we create a required business image and find one’s own style?

This is the work of image consultant and personal shopper: help your client find individual style by selecting lines highlighting figure advantages and hiding defects, selecting colors,

materials and accessories matching his/her professional activity and way of living. And personal shopper accompanies client in the most appropriate for him/her boutiques and shops.

And Milan, being the Italian capital of business and style, is an ideal place for shopping!
