06.02.2015 CITY TRAMS – CONVENIENT TRANSPORT AND SIGHTSEEING ATTRACTION OF MILAN

In general trams in Milan are also the sightseeing attraction and symbol of the city like Duomo or Castello Sforzesco. The picture of the orange Milanese tram can be found on tourist postcards and covers of the books telling you about Milan. Why? This is the most historic and characteristic Milanese mode of transportation, that is why. Trams first appeared in Milan back in 1881 and were driven by a team of horses,

but since 1893 the Milanese could already use electrically driven trams, and now the length of tram lines in Milan reaches 115 km. it’s long, isn’t it? The real thing is, of course, the model of 1928 that is affectionately called by Milanese la Ventotto – twenty-eight.

The trams, almost 90 year old (a real rare thing nowadays!), can be still seen on the streets of Milan and easily recognized for ‘vintage’ outline shape and shining wooden seats.

By the way the same orange trams can be seen… Do you know where? In San-Francisco, USA! Yes, there are the trams with the coat of arms of Milan and entrance/exit sings in Italian there. No wonder, these models of the trams were bought from Milanese company Carminati & Toselli. In San-Francisco the trams are called ‘cable’ and amongst the most important sightseeing attractions of the city transporting about 600,000 tourists per day. And a trip fee is $6!

And it is even more prosaic in Milan. The orange trams (not only orange ones, there are trams of other colors and state-of-the-art)

can be used for sightseeing and also getting to the important sightseeing attractions of Milan at regular €1.5.

For example: tram # 1 or 2 can take you to La Scala theater (La Scala tram stop), the same routes  will take you to the famous ”The Golden Block”- Quadrilatero della Moda (Montenapoleone tram stop)

And tram # 1 will take you to Castello Sforzesco (Cadorna tram stop, where you can also see the Fashion and Design monument) – by the way this is exactly the route of the oldest tram models.
